Summary:
The story begins with three cousins Mehreen, Mashal and Aswad who grow up in the same family.
Mehreen, despite her intelligence, faces rejection and constant criticism due to her father’s fame. Mashal, on the other hand, enjoys the attention and luxury of her parents but is secretly jealous of Mehreen’s natural radiance and Aswad’s love for her.
As they grow older, jealousy and misunderstandings poison their bond. Mashal begins to spread rumors about Mehreen by twisting facts to gain Aswad’s love. Blinded by Mashal’s tricks, Aswad begins to trust Mehreen and considers her arrogant and selfish.
The emotional tension increases when Aswad marries Mehreen not out of love but out of family pressure and guilt. After the marriage, he subjects her to constant suspicion and emotional torture, blaming her for Mashal’s tragic death (which later turns out to be a suicide due to her own guilt and obsession).
Through this complex emotional web, Umera Ahmed exposes society’s tendency to judge people based on perceptions rather than reality. Mehreen’s silence and patience become her only shield, while Aswad’s ultimate realization brings him unbearable remorse.
Themes:
- Jealousy and its destructive power
- Misunderstanding and emotional manipulation
- Hypocrisy of social morality
- Forgiveness and self-redemption
- The fragile nature of human truth
Ending:
The ending is emotional yet reflective. Aswad, realizing Mehreen’s innocence and the depth of her pain, repents of his cruelty and apologizes. Mehreen forgives him but her trust and innocence can never be fully restored.
Umera Ahmed leaves the reader to question: were any of them truly “true” (sache)?
The ending reveals that human nature is flawed, no one is purely innocent or guilty. We are all products of our circumstances, mistakes, and egos.
